The lethal pressures of air combat over northwest Europe in 1944 45 helped push the development of piston driven fighter aircraft to its finest examples by the end of the Second World War Among these were the British Tempest V and the German Fw 190D 9, unique in being entirely products of wartime design and development They are the subject of this fascinating Osprey Duel Series book, well authored by Robert Forsyth. The two fighters came of distinguished and combat proven lineages, a point the author discusses in extensive technical detail that may be a challenge for the general reader The second half of the book offers plenty of instances of combat use over northwest Europe, including against each other The analysis of head to head competition is both interesting and evenhanded Of note, a comparison of the respective pilot training pipelines in late war highlights the growing disparities in pilot experience, save for the Luftwaffe s few surviving aces The narrative is nicely supported with lots of period photographs, and modern maps, illustrations and diagrams Well recommended to students of the air war over northwest Europe.

This is a fun and interesting read about two of the less well known fighters from WWII I enjoyed it.

First rate account of the lives of the fighter pilots on the front lines Amazing, even in the days before Germany s surrender, the British were losing pilots at a high rate, to flak and German fighters.
